Marilyn Darrow-The Crystal Room

    Flower Mandala Art
         by Marilyn Darrow

Flower Mandala Art is digital art, based on Marilyn's photos of flowers and nature taken around her home town of Mt. Shasta, California.  A small portion of a photo, carefully selected, is repeated around a central point.  With digital magic a simple flower becomes a colorful, kaleidoscopic design, always full of intriguing patterns and shapes and if you look closely, mysterious faces.

The word "mandala" itself means "circle", and for thousands of years, mandalas have been used by seekers of illumination, to help draw their attention inward (to the center).  In his book, The Westerm Mandala, Adam McClean writes, "(Mandalas)...can be seen to be keys that unlock the mysteries of our soul's architecture.  If we choose to use them in this way, they can lead us deep into the mysteries of our inner world."

Flower mandalas may indeed relax the mind and balance energy through contemplation of their beautiful, intricate and repetitive patterns. The occasional cute pet, delicate butterfly, busy bee or strange bug may be added, or a wild critter, musical note or heart, providing an occasional touch of whimsy to these fanciful creations. And this could be the highest purpose of art - to offer the observer beauty, and to leave them with a smile!
